WHO WE ARE
Mabuhay! Welcome to the Street Classroom!
The Street Classroom is a volunteer organization founded in the island province of Marinduque, Philippines that operates purely from kindness. In December 2018, it was found that 7 out of 10 Filipino youth don’t have dreams, not because of poverty but simply because no one believes in them. The Street Classroom aims to be a support system to in-schools, out-of-schools (children, youth, and adults), drop-outs, children-at-risk, children-in-conflict with-law (CICL), and learners with physical, economical, or geographical limitations to achieve dreams not just for themselves, but for the entire country, in spite of challenges.
The Street Classroom also seeks to identify and understand problems encountered by learners both at home, and at school to create and provide solutions responsive to their needs. The Street Classroom has the primary goal of maintaining and/or bringing learners back to formal education inside classrooms to further develop their love of country, duties of citizenship, moral character, personal discipline, and scientific, technological, and vocational efficiency. This can be attained by conducting tutorial sessions, follow-up activities, and outreach activities with exercises aligned with the Philippine K-12 Curriculum and Alternative Learning System (ALS) which may help them in passing the Acceleration and Equivalency Test.
Our outreach activities are conducted in open areas or streets, where learners are free to play, to remove the fear of learners from classrooms, teachers, and the mere teaching-learning process, which was found to be one of the reasons why students show disinterest in schooling. Volunteers engage beneficiaries in different games and learning exercises to build strong rapport which is important in teaching the beneficiaries in follow-ups or tutorial sessions.
In a span of less than 2 years, The Street Classroom has conducted 2 award-winning projects, 5 major outreach activities, and facilitated 3 Youth Development Sessions (YDS), with a combined total beneficiary count of more than 3,450 Marinduquenos, 16 public schools, and 14 communities. The Street Classroom is also a two-time recognized organization of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) Awards Inc. (2019 and 2020). All these were achieved through pure kindness in the Heart of the Philippines.
The Street Classroom is also working hard to create collaborations and partnerships with different government agencies like the Department of Education, and Department of Social Welfare and Development to ensure the beneficiaries’ “street to school success”.
